Abstract

The difference between Simplified and Traditional Chinese is a a long standing problem that hinders the communication among users from different Chinese speaking regions in the world. Because of evolving regional differences and ambiguities in the language, automatic conversion for Chinese has been proven to be a difficult task. In this paper, I describe a semi-automatic system that supports the conversion among the different language variants for the Chinese Wikipedia. There are two main features in the system: First, a simple dictionary-based approach is used for the automatic conversion, where the dictionary itself is maintained in the Wikipedia as a regular wiki page. Therefore users can modify the dictionary to reflect newly discovered differences among the variants. Second, to cope with possible ambiguous situations, a special wiki markup is introduced to allow specifying special conversion rules that override the automatic system. Combining these two features, the Chinese Wikipedia is able to deliver contents that are tailored to a user's specific language preference. I discuss the possibility on extending the system to support other languages that have similar conversion needs, and outline future research opportunities in using Wikipedia as training data in designing more intelligent automatic conversion systems to be used in non-wiki environments.
