Wikimania 2005: The First International Wikimedia Conference was held in Frankfurt am Main, Germany from 4 August 2005 to 8 August 2005.

The event was preserved in the proceedings originally compiled on Wikibooks and now on Meta, in public images from Wikimania, and in an archive of slides and video of presentations.

Wikimania provided an opportunity to meet and talk with people at the forefront of the Wikimedia communities and wiki software development. Researchers and speakers presented studies and experiments on Wikipedia and other projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, on wiki culture and technology, and on the world of free knowledge. The programme included a range of presentations, workshops, and tutorials, aimed at newcomers and oldtimers alike, to give for the first time a concise overview of the current state of research on wikis and free knowledge projects.

A primary goal is to promote the various Wikimedia projects and to help them improve their understanding of one another. The objective was achived; 380 participants from over 50 countries attended the conference in Frankfurt. The majority of sessions and conversations were in English, although material from the conference is being translated into multiple languages.

Wikimania has been held annually to pursue its goals, and now Wikimania 2007 is now in preparation, to give a chance again for people to meet the other group from the world, to work together to bring free knowledge to the world.
